Students choose to student English language in Australia for various reasons and with various types of institutions, from private schools to tertiary institutions and Universities. Some take it as a course by itself to improve the use of English and also as an opportunity to learn about Australian culture. Other students take English language as a requirement for their academic course. For whatever reasons, Australia has a good system in place to support international students and assurance of course quality with the presence of NEAS and English Australia (EA).
ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students)
ELICOS is usually taken before the start of a Diploma or degree course. Students take ELICOS for a period between 5 to 40 weeks, depending on their current English language and the English level required for their academic course.
High School Preparation (HSP)
HSP prepares students for Australian High Schools. It is an integrated skills-based program and students are taught speed reading, note taking strategies, research skills, report and essay writing, oral communication and presentation, listening, debating and discussion. The duration of study is dependent on the students' level of English. Students are advised of the length of study required after completion of a schools’ placement test, AEAS or EduTest.
General English
There are also other General English courses available for students who are in Australia for a short term i.e. 2 weeks to 6 months. These courses range from English with excursions for students during summer or Business English for students who are looking for a short break in their careers. Some courses also lead to international qualification awards.
